Eve

It's Christmas eve and I am enjoying the internet from the livingroom. Josh's sister is here for a visit and she is out doing some pre-holiday celebrating so I get to use her laptop while she is out.
It's been fun not having to sit in the lonely computer room.

I just asked Josh if we are going to do some Christmas crackers. I need to be wearing a paper crown while surfing the net.

(I have to say typing on a laptop is not that fun.. I love how I am typing away and then all of a sudden the cursor is 3 rows up typing who knows where.)

In short I wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas. I hope you are cozy in your living room- getting ready to watch a fun Christmas movie.

Christmas Countdown!

Finally last night I broke out the holiday decorations. No real tree for us... with wall to wall carpet in our new place bringing in a sappy tree just didn't seem the smartest thing to do.

I have my sturdy wire tree that sits on the table where I am able to hang all my favorite ornaments. This year was a bit stressful because I had more favorites than I had room on the tree. I had to get a little creative and it worked out great. I have a small winter village under the tree with some minature foil wrapped gifts.

I fill my cake plate dome with bulbs and have that displayed on the counter- my favorite Martha Stewart holiday trick.

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas."

(sorry I have not photos to post- hopefully later today I can clean up the camera disk and get some photos on here)

Settled...

It's been a week and I think we are pretty much settled.

We hung some things on the wall yesterday. I have such a hard time committing to something on the wall. It's only a tiny hole in the wall but still once it's up I wonder will I like the place I chose, will it be straight, will it be centered? Josh tends to hang things to high. He is taller so it probably seems fine to him. He had hung some stuff while I was at work on Friday. I got home and within a hour I had to lower them. Just a bit but still I had to lower them. He has the computer room for all his things- Most stuff is about 8 inches from the ceiling. I have to crank my neck to have a look. Too High!

I am really excited about a print I had framed. I will take photos later and post. We need some large pieces because our place is big and there are lots of white walls.

I put up a humming bird feeder and so far one little guy has come to visit. He was there this morning but I was not able to get a good look. He has a dark back and head with a pink throat. I love having them come right up to the deck. I am thinking I might do a regular bird feeder as well. Get the sunflower seeds that have been shelled so there is not mess. I just hope it's to far for the squirrels to jump on the deck and hog all the treats.

Well I have to get ready for my work Holiday Brunch. We are heading to the Benson for some good food and Mimosas!

Cheers!

Movin' On

The next two weeks are going to be a bit crazy so I thought I would check in now. Not only are we heading into Thanksgiving week we are in the middle of packing up our house. We will be moving to a new place the first of December. We like moving during busy times.... our last move was a month before our wedding. Not stressful or anything.

Hopefully we will be all settled by Christmas.

Knitting has been put on hold- even though I have a baby gift to knit and some holiday knitting to get finished and started. Reading has pretty much been limited to a page or two before having to put the book down and turn out the light. Gardening has gone to bed for the winter...My lemon plant is pretty much loosing all it's leaves. I have two fruits one still green as a lime and the other has turned a nice shade of yellow- as well as the leaves that are falling off daily. I set up my grow light today. Maybe it needs a little more sun.

I should get some things done- so have a Happy Thanksgiving and I will be back hopefully before the winter sotlice!

Trick or Treat

We have had more trick or treaters this year than last- last year was a total of 3 and they came late and were on the older side for trick or treating...

This year has been good- I just had about 10 of them at once- I thought they were going to walk right into the house.
Miles likes to bark and then go to the door and have a look at them. He's trying to peek into their treat bags.

The last little pirate liked Miles and told us we should get another dog.

Simple Hat

Have a baby shower to go to in a couple weeks. Baby girl.

The shower invite was pink and brown so decided to make a little hat to match.

Simple hat from Debbie Bliss Baby Knits for Beginners

Used Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky - 55% Merino wool 33% Microfibre (not sure what this is) 12% Cashmere
Very soft - the pattern called for two skeins- I think I have enough left over to make another hat. That's the drag about knitting- you buy the yarn and you don't want to get to much but then you worry you won't have enough to finish and when you go to buy more they won't have the color you need... it's tricky.

Mr. Pumpkin had to model for me- Miles ran around trying to bite me when i asked him to model.

Have one more baby that I need to knit for - boy- so cannot use left over yarn. Have a pale blue I plan on using. Am torn between making another Simple hat or the little hat from One Skein- I have made it before as well. It's a little more challenging because it has a pattern you have to follow for the first 10 rows. I started it the other night, but had to rip it out because it wasn't turning out right. I think I was tired and shouldn't have started a project. It has Yarn Overs and I think I was dropping the extra stitch and it was throwing everthing off.

I still need to finish the second sock I have been working on. I am at the point where I need to turn the heel and think I need to have someone help me or at least be around to ask questions to.

Last of all in case any one cares- Lint the yarn store in NW has closed it's doors. I went there first to get my simple hat yarn only to find it's now a vintage clothing store. I was sad and couldn't believe it had closed. It was a nice shop- cozy and welcoming. I stopped at a new place on Broadway Twisted- not sure how I feel about it. Not as cozy- they do have tea you can order and have while you knit. Seems more inviting but not the feel I am looking for in a knit shop.

Chicken of the woods

A few streets over there is this nice grassy median between two streets. It's lined with trees and goes for about 8 blocks or so. I often walk Miles through there and the other night I happened to be looking up at the trees and found something interesting.

I call them conkles, but when searching for their name on the internet I couldn't find anything under conkles. Finally I typed into Google- Fungus that you can carve. You often see them at craft shows- people varnish them and do crazy things with them.

The sight I found is calling them Shelf Fungi and did state that the woody shelfs resemble horse hoofs and are called conks.

Laetiporous Sulphureous- Sulphur Shelf Fungus- common name- Sulphur Shelf, chicken of the woods, mushroom chicken, rooster comb.

View from above-

Side View-

You can see some Lichen in there as welll-

I had found it the other night and when I went back with the camera I was on the wrong block looking for it so I was thinking someone had found it and harvested it for their craft project. After roaming around I found the right block and there it was.

While taking photos of it this lady walked by and asked me if was putting up a scary ornament... ya lady I go around the neighborhood parks and place scary ornaments up in trees--I said no it's just nature!

Galette

I made my first Galette. It turned out pretty good- not as sweet as I was thinking it would be.

I had made the dough ahead of time and put it in the fridge. It did say to chill it for 1 hour but I went about 3 and I took it out right when I was ready to roll it. Not a good idea. It needed to warm up a bit. I had the apples going on the stove so I held the dough over the hot apples to help soften it.

I didn't get the egg wash on evenly as you might notice.

Had to have a little Vanilla ice cream to go with it.

Overall it was pretty easy and tasty and I would make it again.

Here are some extra photos taken by Josh... I am not sure how he captures things. When I take the same photo my seem so boring.

Apple craze

Last weekend I did the fruit loop. Lots of apples and pears to be bought. I think some of the stands didn't have their apples labeled correctly. When I got home Josh informed me that the MacIntosh I bought were not really MacIntosh- which after looking at them more carefully I had to agree with him. I also bought some Winter Banana's- realizing they are not true either. I was able to find some honey Crisp that didn't cost a fortune. I have to say they are not the prettiest apples but they sure taste great! I am very picky when it comes to fruit- making eating organic difficult- I like my fruit to look pretty. Finally some Rome's thinking I would make some yummy apple tart/ crisp/ somthing something out of them.

Found a few pears as well- these would be great poached with some sweetness drizzled over them.

A week later the imposter MacIntosh are gone. The Honey Crisp still have a couple lingering in the bowl. The Winter Banana's are hanging out in the trash- they were so hard and gross I couldn't handle them any more. The rome's are looking beautiful waiting to be cooked.

After pouring through my cook books and looking on line I am going with an Apple Galette

Basically a tart without having to use a tart pan. Am looking forward to it. I have to pop over to the store to get some more butternut squash for some soup and think I need to get some vanilla ice cream to go with it.

Tomorrow some friends are coming over and they are each bringing a soup and I am going to make a butternut squash/ ginger/ lime soup along with some dill biscuits and we are going to have a little soup pot luck. I think the apple treat will make for a nice dessert!

F A L L

In celebration I made pumpkin muffins... using a Down East Maine recipe I found on the internet.

Here's a couple steps in the creation of goodness.

used the fun mini cups we got as a wedding gift- thanks John and Christine.... they work great!

Since today is our one year anniversary I got out the little bride and groom that were on top of our wedding cupcakes and took there photo. They look so cute on top of a cupcake. They are such a charming couple.

Here's a couple photos from last weekend. We went for a hike with friends in WA park.

Test roses...

Most of these photos posted are done by Josh- he makes me a little angry because he takes better photos than me!

Well this weekend was fun. We spent our anniversary night in Eugene. Josh played out down there last night so we decided to stay. It was nice to lounge around- it was like we were on a mini tour.

I received news the other day that a good friend is going to be having her second baby in November---- that means baby knitting. I started a little hat for him and am thinking will make matching (different color/ same style) for big brother. I love knitting for fall and winter babies.

I think I am all caught up. I am still working on sock number 2. Have the cuff done and am working on the leg.... need to stay focused on that project and not get carried away with fast baby knits.

Morning Hike

Got up this morning and went for a morning hike with Miles, Josh and couple friends. We started in NW portland and headed into Washington park near the test rose garden. It was pretty much up hill from their house to the rose garden so at first I was thinking what the.... i felt like we sprinted to the top. Out of breath we continued through the test garden- made our way to something that looked like a trail. After climbing our way through over turned trees and debris we made it to the official trail where there was a orange fencing stopping people from going down there. I guess they should have had it at the bottom as well.

Meandering through Washington park felt good. I had not been there for a while. Miles was able to run off leash so that made him happy. He is now passed out on the futon so sleepy that his lips are stuck up on his teeth- it looks like he is smiling. We made our way to the japanese garden and back to the test garden and back to the car.

It was a nice hike and felt good to get out.

Pictures to be posted later- camera battery is charging.

I have a new project to work on- well two projects. Last fall I started a pair of socks and got one almost finished- I got the magazine the pattern was in back from Natty and decided to finish the one and get started on the second. Maybe I can finish it in time to give it as a christmas gift. Looking back on my old notes the second sock is going to be just as foreign as the first. I need to be a better note taker.

Second project is to make a slip cover for a ottoman I was given. I looked on line for a way to do it and basically you buy enough fabric to cover it- place the fabric face down on the ottoman pin the sides into triangles cut and sew- done.

If it sounds odd check out the website

Our sofa is brown leather and we have a red leather chair- the rug is browns and reds. Right now the ottoman is blue- country blue- I am thinking a red flower pattern or maybe a more modern pattern with shapes.

The hardest thing about sewing I think is picking the fabric. If someone would just pick it out and say here sew- that would be great. I really dread going to the fabric store. We have a fabric Depot and it's endless fabric and it's so over whelming. Then we have the local trendy fabric store Bolt- every thing is cute and easy to see- more expensive but it makes shopping for fabric easier- so I guess to save myself the stress I would rather pay a little more per yard and shop at Bolt.

Photos of before and afer ottoman to come later- remember camera battery charging.

apples

Went to the farmers market yesterday for the first time in a while. The summer always seems to get busy and I take a break from going. The spring is all about going and then after not going for a while I realize it's not going to be happening much longer and I need to go.

Not many squash out yet- one stand had a couple. I was excited to find some apples- MacIntosh (Josh's favorite) and Honey Crisp (My favorite)! The honey crisp are always on the expensive side, but so worth it. I tried a pink something- not very pretty on the outside but a lovely shade of pink on the inside- they are tart- wow pucker! They would make a beautiful apple sauce.

Will have to do the fruit loop soon. I love fall and am happy it's around the corner. Even though it's still in the 80's the air is changing and it's a cool 80's.

I am wondering if I can do an apple/ rhubarb crisp- or will it be to tart. Going to have to search that one out.

I had my eye on some leeks thinking potato leek soup sounded good- but then felt it's not quite chilly enough to start making soups. Maybe in the next week or two.

I did not know...

There was going to be a Total Lunar Eclipse this morning.

I was taking Josh to work at 4:30am and the eclipse had just recently started to turn back.

I tried to capture some photos but when the shutter speed is so slow it's hard not to wiggle a little bit - the photos are a little shaky.

It looks like some crazy pac man's-- pac moon.

feels like the end up summer

Roses from the front yard-

I have been on a cleaning kick all day.

I have all the curtains in the washer, have rearranged the kitchen and cleaned the floors, detailed the bathroom floor and cleaned out a corner of the livingroom that had all my yarn and stuff crowded under the end table. Cleaned out the fireplace and then moved outside.

The sun is changing so my plants are not getting much afternoon sun. I moved them all around, weeded and cleaned up the patio area.

The last of the red cherry tomatoes!

After looking at my yarn I decided I need to get thinking of some christmas gifts and maybe start on some projects.

A busy day of cleaning made Miles sleepy. Doing what he does best.

not so chatty

Some months I seem to have lots to say- this month not so much.

Was able to finish second cute skirt- when I want something new to wear I can just make a new skirt. I need to find a easy shirt pattern.

This has been a lazy Sunday- mostly watched movies. Thumbsucker and Harry Potter 5.

one red

I have one red tomato- no bread to toast and have a toasted tomato sandwich.... I really need to get to the grocery.

There are more to come, but so far only one. My green grapes are still really green- have to wait until they turn a yellowish green - then they are ready to pick.

I feel bad I have not made it to the farmers markets the last couple of Saturdays. It seems to be how it goes. In the Spring I am so ready for fresh veggies I cannot wait for the market to start, around this time of year I feel over it and find there are other things in life that take me away from the market- this summer seems to be buying a house takes up most of my spare time.

Tonight I am going to cut out another cute skirt- I found some fabric at a resale shop and plan to make a skirt this weekend to wear Monday. I stopped to check out this red leather chair I had been eyeing. This resale shop is odd- they are not always open and I am not sure if they keep regular hours. I have seen the chair there for the last couple of weeks and everytime I want to stop the traffic is crazy and I just drive by. Well Friday night I saw it while waiting for the light to change and decided to stop in and have a look. I ended up getting it. It's in pretty good shape and the price was reasonable. I have a dorm chair in the living room that I bought at bed bath and beyond - it folds up and can fit in a corner- I decided it was time for that chair to go and get a bit better one. This is a step up- with a little leather cleaner it will be great.

I will try and post photos later.

Well I am off to make a new skirt- drink some wine and enjoy my Saturday night.

Still Growing

My one lone lemon is still hanging on. Everyday I look to see if it has fallen off... everyday it's still there! I noticed the other day that there is a new little lemon- its about the size of a large olive.

Lots of green tomatoes. The cherry tomoatoes went crazy and have been picking them regularly. The others are still green but getting bigger.

The green grape tomato has some fruit but not many. It seems to dry out faster than the other- it looks stressed.

Another photo of me making Miles get his photo taken- he hates it.

Cute Skirt

Had my first class and have my homework almost done.

I am not sure why I was nervous... it ended up being pretty simple. I think reading a pattern is what makes sewing intimidating.

Basically you cut 8 panels and have a waist band and that's that. I wish the class was 4 hours instead of spread out into 2 classes of 2 hours. I would be able to wear my skirt tomorrow.

I thought about moving forward and just finishing the skirt- but then what would I do in the next class and would that be showing off????

Here's what I have so far.

Front 3 panels

Back 5 panels

This might be something that I will enjoy once I make it and actually end up wearing it.

I see some other skirts in my future. Black panels with black and white polka dot panels mixed in.... or a cordoury skirt.

ho hum....

so far the weekend hasn't added up to much except...

did open second savings account- BIG LETTERS ACROSS CHECK BOOK COVER---HOUSE MONEY---
in this account I will place every last penny that I can spare to go towards buying a house- or once buying a house be able to fix some things on the house, or buy stuff to put in house.

Need to be more serious about my money- though IKEA opened this week about 2 minutes from my house--- need to set IKEA budget and stick to it. I can ride my bike to IKEA- that could be savings in it self. Can only buy what can carry home on bike and riding bike would save gas money- I think I have a plan.

Rest of the afternoon spent cruising the Couve.... The longest I have been in the couve was for a the 4th Harry Potter movie and for a graduation party!

Looked at 6 houses. Of those 6 there was 1 that we liked- the only thing is it needs some work and we are not sure we can afford the work it needs- new roof on the house and the garage- and the chimney looks like it's separateing from the house.--- bathroom needs an upgrade- it's pretty much wall to wall carpet---needs new windows... all this stated the seller is not fixing anything- sell as is.

The rest of the day is left to checking out some houses in N. Portland and maybe cooking some dinner.

Tomorrow high lites- sewing class- my fabric is drying as we speak...

RC Steak House

Got my fabric for my "sew a cute skirt" class. Cannot wait to actually learn how to sew something that will hopefully, in the end, fit me. Have not had good luck in the past.

Happy hour at Ruth's Chris Steak House- Yum.... we brought our own wine and they didn't charge us corkage..... What a great place.

Good food, good conversation, good friends, good way to end a muggy weekend.

HP

Did you get your Harry Potter book last night at midnight?

I had ordered mine back in March from Amazon- Them saying I would have it by the release date.... no I won't get it until next wednesday or so.

I should have learned. I think I did the same thing with the last book and ended up buying it at the grocery long before my copy was to arrive- probably for the same price or lower.

We'll just have to wait.

No House for Us

We decided not to go with the house- in the end it was just to small. There were lots of red flags and our guts were telling us no but we plugged along hoping it would work out. On the very last day we could walk away with out loosing any money we decided it just wasn't the house for us.

We continue our journey- I hope the next house we find I am totally in love with it and I don't have such mixed feelings. This has been a stressful month.

I guess a few days to relax and get over the cold I have and then back to the drawing board.

Monday, July 16, 2007

Still Waiting....

We are still waiting to hear back about the things we want fixed on the house. They have until Wednesday to respond. They were quick with the counter offer- so not sure about this.

At this point if they don't want to fix the things we requested we are ready to walk. If it's not meant to be then it won't be... I just wish if it wasn't meant to be, we would have found out a lot sooner...

Hopefully we will know more tomorrow. Maybe they are getting bids on the stuff to fix.

It's hot

I feel like such a whimp. It's 85 out and I am so over the heat. Next week is suppose to be in the 70's and I cannot wait.

Last night we had a thunder storm. We get a lot of rain but we do not get a lot of thunder and lighting. It passed over pretty quickly- gave us a little rain- not much.

Miles didn't like it- he barked and ran around the yard. He has become quite a sap in his old age. He doesn't like loud noises. He's a corn fed pup from NE and he is barking at a little thunder- jeez!

Friday the 13th-

I noticed the check number I used to start escrow was 1970- the year I was born- thought maybe this was a good sign. Now today is the day we are sending over the items we would like to be fixed- going off the inspection we had. Is that a good thing or bad thing?

We are pretty much asking for everything- hoping we get a couple of the main things- new hot water heater/ chimney repaired/ some outlets repaired/ and some loose ends under the house that need to be taken care of.

Every one keeps asking are you in love with this house? Was anyone in love with their first house- it's the biggest purchase I have ever made in my life- I thought buying a car was tough- I cannot afford to buy the house I would be in love with. Will I grow to love this house? Probably. We will make it our home and I am sure when it comes time down the road when we are thinking it's time to sell and up grade I will sit on the front porch and cry and say I don't want to move- I love my neighborhood, I love our little house- I don't want to move.... I see a pattern!

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Todays the Day

Our inspections starts at 1pm..... We will know all this houses dirtly little secrets.
If we find anything and want to back out we can- nothing lost on our end- just the cost of the inspector- if we ask the seller to fix the stuff we find they have 3 days to say if they are going to or not. If all goes well we just wait for closing which will hopefully happen around the 8th of August!

Yesterday it was a 100 degrees and today it's suppose to be just as hot. I didn't think to look and see how hot it was inside last night- this morning it's 83 in our house.

070707

So far today had my breaks checked- they are fine no need for new ones- had the oil changed- ate a bagel and had some coffee.

Not sure what else to do with myself. When I don't have things planned to do I feel strange and out of sorts. I go go go so much that when I have free time I don't know what to do with myself.

Ended up going by the house to have another look around. Got to see how the sun was hitting it around noon- Will be able to have veggie garden in the back yard. Was thinking I would build raised beds in the space between the sidewalk and street- found out there is no space- sidewalk goes right to the street. Realized Josh and I have different ideas about the fence we want to build.... That will be interesting- I had no idea he was thinking that way.

Need to start a plant wish list. I was saying today how there are no yards in my neighborhood that I really like. I have a couple that I enjoy but they have things I would do different. Walking Miles tonight I found one that seems to be what I am looking for. I wonder if I take a photo of it will they think I am a stalker? Should I ask first? I used to think I only like sun loving plants and how boring it would be to have to garden with shade plants, but the more I think about it I think I would enjoy a shade garden more. I have the front of the house that will be mostly shade some sun in the late evening and there is spot in the backyard where i can make a nice shade garden. I cannot wait! I am counting the chickens before they are hatched....

After dreaming we had lunch in possibly our new neighborhood- then I decided I was going to go pick blueberries. If I put it off any longer I won't go. Unable to find anyone to go with me- I ventured out to Sauvie Island to my favorite place- My favorite place has a new name and has expanded a little. It was great- I filled two buckets pretty quickly- It was nice because I was able to chat with a friend from NE while picking- that made the time go by faster.

4- 1 quart bags are in the freezer and I have a large bowl left over to munch on for the next few days. I think I need to go one more time and that will be enough to keep me happy until next season.

Here are the smallest photos you will ever see. I took them with my phone.

Inspection

the inspection is set for Wednesday- it will make or break the deal. There are a couple things we are concerned about and it will be interesting to see what the inspector has to say.
I am wondering what happens if the guy finds something wrong. We have 10 days to have an inspection- so on the 6 day he finds something- do they have 4 days to fix it or say they are not going to fix it or take money off the asking price? This is another one of those obsticals that will probably end up making me crazy when I have to deal with it.
I looked back on last years blog and I was going through kind of the same thing- I was moving and getting ready for a wedding.... What will happen next year?

it's not over

so we had to meet in the middle- that's fine.
Still have to make it through the home inspection-
Every one says you don't sound like you are in love with it... We'll as my friend put it "It's not like Christmas Morning!" There are so many factors you have to deal with. Even if I was buying my dream home- I don't think I would be out front doing cart wheels.
I have a hard time choosing what hair products to buy- why do you think buying a house would be an easy thing?

I see potential- fence- garden- landscape-

Maybe when we are having a house warming party I will be out front doing cart wheels. Until then avoid me because I am an emotional roller coaster.
