Trick or Treat

We have had more trick or treaters this year than last- last year was a total of 3 and they came late and were on the older side for trick or treating...

This year has been good- I just had about 10 of them at once- I thought they were going to walk right into the house.
Miles likes to bark and then go to the door and have a look at them. He's trying to peek into their treat bags.

The last little pirate liked Miles and told us we should get another dog.

Simple Hat

Have a baby shower to go to in a couple weeks. Baby girl.

The shower invite was pink and brown so decided to make a little hat to match.

Simple hat from Debbie Bliss Baby Knits for Beginners

Used Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky - 55% Merino wool 33% Microfibre (not sure what this is) 12% Cashmere
Very soft - the pattern called for two skeins- I think I have enough left over to make another hat. That's the drag about knitting- you buy the yarn and you don't want to get to much but then you worry you won't have enough to finish and when you go to buy more they won't have the color you need... it's tricky.

Mr. Pumpkin had to model for me- Miles ran around trying to bite me when i asked him to model.

Have one more baby that I need to knit for - boy- so cannot use left over yarn. Have a pale blue I plan on using. Am torn between making another Simple hat or the little hat from One Skein- I have made it before as well. It's a little more challenging because it has a pattern you have to follow for the first 10 rows. I started it the other night, but had to rip it out because it wasn't turning out right. I think I was tired and shouldn't have started a project. It has Yarn Overs and I think I was dropping the extra stitch and it was throwing everthing off.

I still need to finish the second sock I have been working on. I am at the point where I need to turn the heel and think I need to have someone help me or at least be around to ask questions to.

Last of all in case any one cares- Lint the yarn store in NW has closed it's doors. I went there first to get my simple hat yarn only to find it's now a vintage clothing store. I was sad and couldn't believe it had closed. It was a nice shop- cozy and welcoming. I stopped at a new place on Broadway Twisted- not sure how I feel about it. Not as cozy- they do have tea you can order and have while you knit. Seems more inviting but not the feel I am looking for in a knit shop.

Chicken of the woods

A few streets over there is this nice grassy median between two streets. It's lined with trees and goes for about 8 blocks or so. I often walk Miles through there and the other night I happened to be looking up at the trees and found something interesting.

I call them conkles, but when searching for their name on the internet I couldn't find anything under conkles. Finally I typed into Google- Fungus that you can carve. You often see them at craft shows- people varnish them and do crazy things with them.

The sight I found is calling them Shelf Fungi and did state that the woody shelfs resemble horse hoofs and are called conks.

Laetiporous Sulphureous- Sulphur Shelf Fungus- common name- Sulphur Shelf, chicken of the woods, mushroom chicken, rooster comb.

View from above-

Side View-

You can see some Lichen in there as welll-

I had found it the other night and when I went back with the camera I was on the wrong block looking for it so I was thinking someone had found it and harvested it for their craft project. After roaming around I found the right block and there it was.

While taking photos of it this lady walked by and asked me if was putting up a scary ornament... ya lady I go around the neighborhood parks and place scary ornaments up in trees--I said no it's just nature!

I made my first Galette. It turned out pretty good- not as sweet as I was thinking it would be.

I had made the dough ahead of time and put it in the fridge. It did say to chill it for 1 hour but I went about 3 and I took it out right when I was ready to roll it. Not a good idea. It needed to warm up a bit. I had the apples going on the stove so I held the dough over the hot apples to help soften it.

I didn't get the egg wash on evenly as you might notice.

Had to have a little Vanilla ice cream to go with it.

Overall it was pretty easy and tasty and I would make it again.

Here are some extra photos taken by Josh... I am not sure how he captures things. When I take the same photo my seem so boring.

Apple craze

Last weekend I did the fruit loop. Lots of apples and pears to be bought. I think some of the stands didn't have their apples labeled correctly. When I got home Josh informed me that the MacIntosh I bought were not really MacIntosh- which after looking at them more carefully I had to agree with him. I also bought some Winter Banana's- realizing they are not true either. I was able to find some honey Crisp that didn't cost a fortune. I have to say they are not the prettiest apples but they sure taste great! I am very picky when it comes to fruit- making eating organic difficult- I like my fruit to look pretty. Finally some Rome's thinking I would make some yummy apple tart/ crisp/ somthing something out of them.

Found a few pears as well- these would be great poached with some sweetness drizzled over them.

A week later the imposter MacIntosh are gone. The Honey Crisp still have a couple lingering in the bowl. The Winter Banana's are hanging out in the trash- they were so hard and gross I couldn't handle them any more. The rome's are looking beautiful waiting to be cooked.

After pouring through my cook books and looking on line I am going with an Apple Galette

Basically a tart without having to use a tart pan. Am looking forward to it. I have to pop over to the store to get some more butternut squash for some soup and think I need to get some vanilla ice cream to go with it.

Tomorrow some friends are coming over and they are each bringing a soup and I am going to make a butternut squash/ ginger/ lime soup along with some dill biscuits and we are going to have a little soup pot luck. I think the apple treat will make for a nice dessert!
